A little late to the game but…the VMAs now has a K-Pop category?!

The MTV’s Video Music Awards is a yearly award ceremony which honours only the best music video releases by artists and producers. Their categories range from Artist and Song of the Year to Best Direction and Choreography. In the 2019’s 36th annual ceremony, the Hallyu movement, or “Korean Wave,” officially reached MTV, causing them to add the Best K-Pop category to the list of award categories.

Crazy! I still find this hard to believe, but it is such a marvellous accomplishment for the Korean entertainment industry. The winners for the 2019 VMAs were BTS with their mega-hit “Boy With Luv” featuring Halsey. No surprise there.

Who will be taking the prize home in this years’ 37th award ceremony?

MTV officially released the nominees for this category on July 30, and they are:

(G) I•DLE — “Oh My God”

BTS — “On”

EXO — “Obsession”

MONSTA X — “Someone’s Someone”

TXT — “9 and Three Quarters (Run Away)”

Red Velvet — “Psycho”

But that’s not all for our K-Pop idols.

BTS also got nominated for Best Pop and Best Choreography for “On,” bringing them to a total of three nominations.

In recent years, the Korean entertainment industry has seen significant accomplishments in the American and overall global market: BTS has appeared and performed in multiple TV shows like Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon; BLACKPINK had the honour of performing in Coachella, and they have their own dolls, Micro Pop Stars, and other merchandise at Target; Director Bong JunHo won six Oscars with his movie “Parasite”; Red Velvet’s “Zimzalabim” was in the film “Trolls: World Tour” and the members voiced characters; and many groups and soloists have gone on successful tours in the United States and around the world.

The success of the South Korean entertainment industry can be traced back to 1994, when, then, President Kim YoungSam, learned that the export revenue of Stephen Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park” (1993), a film with a $63 million budget, matched the sales of 1.5 million Hyundai cars of a single year.

When the major financial crisis hit Asia in 1997, the South Korean government realized that they heavily depended on industries with complicated supply chains. It was then when the government decided to shift focus and spend millions of dollars on subsidies and loans in cultural industries to promote and export K-Pop.

Today, South Korea impacts more lives per capita than any other nation in the world.

Fun Fact: Did you know that two of the artists nominated, BTS and TXT, are both from the same music label? Talk about accomplishments for Big Hit Entertainment.

The MTV VMAs will take place on Sunday, August 30 at 5 p.m. CST. You may vote here.

Who will you be voting for?
