[#ThrowbackThursday]

Although I first heard this song in 2015, Jung JoonIl’s “Hug Me,” one of his biggest hits, is one of my most favourite songs. From the lyrics to the emotion that he sings with, this song hits the centre of my soul and makes me want to cry every time.

The song is a heartbreaking ballad about missing someone so much you just want them to embrace you. Hug you.

***
Be by my side |
Stay by my side |
Don’t let go of my hand |
If you take one more step away |
I just have to take one step closer, isn’t it?

I’m not myself |
I have no confidence |
A day without you, I can’t endure it | 니가 없는 하루 견딜 수가 없어
I don’t know what to do now. Me without you | 이젠 뭘 어떻게 해야 할지 모르겠어 니가 없는 난

Just hug me | 그냥 날 안아줘
Hug me for a bit |
Don’t say anything.
With a lonely and anxious heart |
I will wait for you like this | 이렇게 널 기다리고 있잖아

I love you | 난 너를 사랑해
I love you | 난 너를 사랑해
I shout it out after a long silence |
Though childish and weak, it’s my true feeling… |

Can’t you just feel the pain of a past breakup by reading these lyrics? By hearing the emotions from the singer?

I certainly do. Every time. And when I’m in this particular situation, I ball hard.

Jung JoonIl first released this song as part of his first full-length album, “Lo9ve3r4s,” on November 23, 2011. During an appearance on KBS’ “Yoo HeeYeol’s Sketchbook,” he mentioned he was only able to perform “Hug Me” twice before enlisting in the military service and was surprised to see how much love and attention this stong garners to this day.

What’s your go-to breakup song?
